Let's face it, the clock is ticking and wasting even a minute of our day isn't an option for most of us. Maximizing your work in the gym can not only lead to more results in your training, but it can also mean you get done faster, which translates to more time for other things!  Navigating workout partners and schedules can be tricky, so let's break this down because he/she might be jeopardizing your gains. 

  1. Is your workout partner always late? If so, it's time to have a chat and get on the same page as far as scheduling goes. 10 minutes of waiting around can add up quickly. Time lost equates to results lost. 
  1. Does your workout partner habitually cancel at the last minute? If they do, you might be more likely to decide on skipping the gym too. Partners can be great for accountability, but they can also lead you to stray off course when they ditch you. 
  1. Have you become a built-in therapist for your overly talkative gym partner? He/she might not realize that they are sabotaging your sessions with their constant gabbing. Try to redirect the focus back towards the task at hand, and if this doesn't work then it's time to level with them.
  1. Do you feel like your partner is holding you back? Your dedication level is solid because you have your eye on the prize and know exactly what your fitness goals are. Your gym pal, on the other hand, is flaky and noncommittal. When you want to push harder and max out, you need someone to help you follow through, not someone who will let you take the easy route. 
  1. Do you look forward to your sessions with your gym partner or is it something you are dreading more every day? Take an inventory of the pros and cons of your gym relationship and see which one outweighs the other. If the list of cons is longer, then it's time to cut the cord and move on. 

It might be time to lose the dependency on your gym partner. No one can get in the way of your results unless you let them. Take responsibility for your training time and if you don't like what you see change it. Make your workout count!
